Sudden Death of Show Pony Clouds Image of Elite Pursuit « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Early on the morning of May 26, Kristen Williams and her daughter, Katie, arrived at a barn on the grounds of the Devon Horse Show, where elite competitors in full dress have entertained spectators for the last century on Philadelphia’s Main Line.
Ms. Williams had paid thousands of dollars to lease a pony for Katie to ride in a hunter competition, a 12th birthday present. Soon after arriving, their trainer left to administer an injection to a nearby pony, Humble, that Katie’s friend, also celebrating her 12th birthday, was scheduled to ride shortly.

Wild Horse & Burro Deaths are Disguised by the BLM
SAN FRANCISCO (December 13, 2012)–In honor of the National Day of the Horse, Protect Mustangs calls for an end to cruel roundups of native wild horses. The California based conservation group is circulating a Change.org petition to Congress to De-fund and Stop the Roundups. The roundups are deadly and theBureau of Land Management (BLM) is skewing the death count. The BLM emphasizes preexisting conditions so Congress won’t realize how many indigenous wild horses are being killed as a result of the roundups.

LAS VEGAS — (December 12, 2012)  Calls to boycott Nevada are emerging on social media following widespread coverage of an ugly incident in Northern Nevada involving wild horses being trapped by state officials. The reports document the continued removal of wild horses, not by the Bureau of Land Management, but by the Nevada Department of Agriculture. Adding fuel to the fire, after the wild horses are trapped they are sold through livestock auctioning where they are in danger of being purchased by kill-buyers. In recent months the public’s outcry to save wild horses from slaughter was noticed by the BLM; a policy change limiting the number of horses that can be sold to one buyer has just been announced.

Our wild horses are on the edge of a planned extinction by the Bureau of Land Management(BLM) because it has chosen corporate socialism over the interest of the American taxpayer.
The American people must demand that the BLM stop wild horse round-ups immediately and require an independent investigation of their blatant mismanagement and betrayal of our nation’s magnificent wild mustangs. “Ken Salazar should be proud,” says filmmaker Ginger Kathrens of the Secretary of the Interior. “This is an Advisory Board that Salazar has created to manage wild horses to extinction.”

Straight from the Wild Horse’s Mouth: A Letter to Santa « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Straight from the Wild Horse’s Mouth: A Letter to Santa « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Dear Santa-
I am an old wild stallion.  I am told that I am one of the last Twin Peaks stallions.  I have had a wonderful life as Mother Nature planned for me from the very day I was born.  I lived the first 22 years free and wild and learned from my sire, dam, siblings and family band what was good for me to eat and where to find the fresh water springs that are hidden in the hills.  I romped and played with the young colts and fillies in my extended family.  Under the watchful protection of our family members, we young horses frolicked in the snow and creeks and rested in the shade of the old Juniper trees in the heat of the summer. Life was very good.  I later grew to be a healthy, robust and compassionate herd stallion with beautiful loyal mares and amusing, vigorous offspring.  Although I now have a good “retirement” life in a sanctuary with other displaced animals, my life in the wild was perfect for a wild one like me!

PARIS — For decades, American horses, many of them retired or damaged racehorses, have been shipped to Canada and Mexico, where it is legal to slaughter horses, and then processed and sold for consumption in Europe and beyond.
Lately, however, European food safety officials have notified Mexican and Canadian slaughterhouses of a growing concern: The meat of American racehorses may be too toxic to eat safely because the horses have been injected repeatedly with drugs.

Nevada Wild Horses could be Destined to Slaughter in Days « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Nevada Wild Horses could be Destined to Slaughter in Days « Straight from the Horse's Heart

“Yesterday we ran a brief story with photos of a 3 month old foal being abused at a Nevada Department of Agriculture bait trap on private property.  As the day progressed Reno area advocates began to write and comment on what they had witnessed and we corrected a few errors in the story but the point and the problem never shifted or dimmed.  The concern and anger generated by the photos fueled the biggest number of hits this blog has ever seen in a single day; thousands and thousands of concerned Americans logged in.  Frustration is so thick you can cut it with a knife.

This, folks, is beyond serious.  We at Wild Horse Freedom Federation are currently working a behind the scenes legal project to shut down the BLM‘s rapid desimation of wild horse & burros on federal public lands.  We are not chasing individual roundups with TROs as they just don’t work and we have abounded access and humane care issues as, at this rate, they are only a distraction and moot as there won’t even be any wild horses if we do not stop the roundups and do so quickly.  But our hearts are torn to pieces over what is happening to these Virginia range “state” horses as these captives go directly to auction and can end up in the hands of kill buyers within just a few days or weeks.  This is the fear and this also the reality.  These true wild horses are facing a death sentence, right now.

Please spend a few moments and read several of the comments that folks have made and then make a call or fax as outlined below.  Maybe with enough heat, even from outside of the state, Nevada officials will listen and enter into productive talks, with the knowledgeable advocates who are speaking below, and seek a humane solution versus slaughtering these horses for human consumption abroad.
Thanks to all those who care and lend their voices to those who cannot speak.” ~ R.T.

PLEASE OPPOSE BLM’S DEVASTATING PLAN FOR WYOMING’S RED DESERT WILD HORSES « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Taking its marching orders from Wyoming’s powerful livestock industry, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is planning the second roundup in less than three years of wild horses living in the Adobe Town and Salt Wells Creek Herd Management Areas (HMAs) in Wyoming’s pristine Red Desert region. The 1.5 million-acre public land area is managed as a complex due to wild horse movements between the two HMAs. The roundup is proceeding despite the fact that the Adobe Town HMA is substantially below the low end of the Allowable Management Level (AML) of 610 – 800 horses. Even more disturbing, the BLM intends to remove all wild horses on “private land or checkerboard land within the Rock Springs Office portion of the HMA.” Since the majority of the Salt Wells HMA is “checkerboard” (alternating public and private land parcels), and since the wild horses living there cannot tell the difference between public and private land, this raises the alarming possiblity that the entire HMA will be zeroed out!

All but 36 of Davis’ 1,777 purchases coincide with Salazar’s tenure as Interior secretary, now in its fourth year.

Twin Peaks Rush Creek Wild Fire Report: Where are All the Wild Horses and Burros? « Straight from the Horse's Heart

A wildfire started on Sunday, August 12th, 2012 from an apparent lightning strike and by the time it was contained on August 30th it had burned over 315,577 acres in California’s largest legally designated Wild Horse and Burro Herd Management Area, Twin Peaks.  Craig Downer, Wildlife Ecologist and “Grandma” Gregg, Environmental Researcher are experienced wild horse and burro observers and both familiar with the Twin Peaks Herd Management Area where the majority of the three days were spent searching for Wild Horses and Burros and documenting the extent of the fire damage.  Over 22 hours and 114 miles covered plus hikes into some remote off-road areas.  Travels included many stops to search with binoculars to look for any signs of wildlife – dead or alive.  Any live large and medium animals would be easier to locate in the burned areas due to lack of forage cover and any dead animals would be more difficult to find because of the grey-black color of the burned landscape. During our three long days of traveling through the Wild Horse and Burro Herd Management Area we only found 22 wild horses and 3 burros.

Dignity for Wild Horses?!?!? « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Sorry folks, while researching for an uplifting equine related story to share with all of you, today, I came across a post in the Denver Post that I thought was the ticket.  I was reading along, enjoying the poignant and accurate equine accolades and out of nowhere a freight train ran over me and left me crumpled, seathing and speechless on my office floor.  Nuff said, I will let you read on but the DP is getting to be a bit of a pain in the ass.

Money, Ego and the Failure to Save Wild Horses and Burros « Straight from the Horse's Heart

n the past 36 hours there has been a whirlwind of hysteria swirling around an incomplete article on captured American wild horses and burros being sent to slaughter under the watchful eye of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the very agency charged with protecting these national treasures.  David Philipps published said article on what is touted to be an investigative piece on the possibility of a kill buyer purchasing captured wild horses from the BLM and then shipping them off to slaughter but Philipps grievously failed to wait for the story to conclude with final proof and verification of exactly when, how and where the horses actually went.

Breaking News: 30 Nevada Wild Horses Rescued from Kill Buyers and Slaughter « Straight from the Horse's Heart

esterday, as dusk settled over the Fallon Livestock Exchange, 30 terrified wild horses — 23 adults and 7 foals by their mothers’ sides — were put up for auction. For years, the mustangs lived peacefully on state lands in the foothills that surround Reno. Now, after being captured by the Nevada Department of Agriculture, the horses were being sold by the pound, in grave danger of being purchased by kill buyers who would ship them for slaughter in Canada or Mexico.

While there is an obvious disagreement about the method used to dispose of the first eleven horses, I’m very thankful that these five are safe and will continue to live productive lives. The officials in Austin made the decision to turn these horses over to Habitat for Horses rather than try to make a few bucks off them with a killer-buyer, which rates as a win for them, for us and mainly for the horses.

Several pro-horse organizations are in the valley for their international conference to strategize their opposition to the planned re-opening of American slaughterhouses for horses. An obscure provision in a law, approved last year, opens the window to new American slaughterhouses which would process horse meat for overseas markets. Opponents say it’s a cold-blooded business decision.

Wild Horse DC Pose Delivers Goods « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Dear Fellow Equine Welfare Advocates:

No press release, just a simple thank you note.

On a personal level I would like to thank everyone involved for the success of delivering your heartfelt letters to D.C. asking the President to put a stop to the senseless management to extinction of our wild horses and burros.

Thanks go our Wild Horse Freedom Federation’s BoD, Habitat for Horses, the Cloud Foundation, the Office of Rep. Jim Moran, Horseback Magazine, PPJ Gazette, Protect Mustangs, Respect4Horses, Equine Welfare Alliance, Native Wild Horse Protection, Animal Law Coalition, Marin Mustangs, my wife Terry, Jerry Finch and the thousands and thousands of outraged American taxpayers who took the time to collect their thoughts and forward their feelings to us so that we could take them to Washington D.C. (apologies to anyone I may have forgotten)

I have to be honest with you all and say that over the past 72 hours I have been in shock and overcome by awe when considering the intensity of the overall response and the out powering of sentiment and conviction documented in the mailings that we received.  There were a few moments where I thought that we might have bitten off more than we could chew but we did what we said we would do and your letters are, currently, in Congressman Jim Moran’s office in preparation to be delivered to the President with an accompanying cover letter.

Pickens Wild Horse Plan: Betrayed? « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Three sanctuaries for our nation’s wild horses in Elko District NE Nevada, known as Herd Management Areas (HMAs), are soon likely to be zeroed out. The Mustangs in the Spruce Pequop, Goshute, and Antelope Valley HMAs, numbering 434 at their upper management level, will be rounded up and removed. Gone will be their legal lands and legal homes. Gone will be their family bands that have supported and protected them. Gone will be the stallions as producers and protectors, the mares as nurturers, leaders and educators, and the foals as learners. Fractured and separated, all will go to different pens, to barren feedlot corrals, and the stallions will be gelded.

Update: WHFF Founders Carry “Stop the Wild Horse & Burro Stampedes” Message to DC « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Dear fellow equine advocates;

We wrote to you last month regarding the frustration and agitation surfacing in common everyday Americans over the rapid and unnecessary roundup and removal of federally protected wild horses and burros from their rightful public land has been growing exponentially.

Said frustration has pushed average citizens, such as ourselves, to extraordinary measures in an effort to either facilitate dialogue with the offending governmental agencies or to effect change through legal litigation in an effort to insist that the violators follow the very laws they are charged to uphold.  To date, our efforts have paled in light of the intensity and volume of disputed roundups and continued mismanagement of the very equines that the Bureau of Land Management is tasked to protect.

From our personal perspective, Terry and I have had enough.  Our fight through Wild Horse Freedom Federation (WHFF) is ongoing but we are turning up the volume by hand-carrying at least 7,000 individual letters to the President asking him to “Stop the Stampedes” so that appropriate science and sound management techniques can be applied before our western states are devoid of America’s most treasured national icons; our wild horses and burros.

Please note; no helicopters, fences or traps.
