The Man Who Could Save America’s Wild Horses « Straight from the Horse's Heart

The Man Who Could Save America’s Wild Horses « Straight from the Horse's Heart

When Ken Salazar announced his resignation earlier this month as Secretary of the Interior, it set off quivers of speculation among wild horse advocates about who might replace him in the post most important to the fate of the nation’s vulnerable herds. Salazar, a longtime Colorado rancher, was never trusted by the wild horse community. Under his direction, the Bureau of Land Management has left the horses more exposed, literally and figuratively, than they’ve been in decades.

BLM Writes to WHFF: ‘Rock Springs Wild Horse Holding Facility Update’ « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Last Friday Debbie Coffey, Wild Horse Freedom Federation’s (WHFF) Director of Wild Horse Affairs, and myself as volunteer president of WHFF received a most unusual email, it simply read:
Hi
Please find an update about the Rock Springs Wild Horse Holding Facility.
Thanks

Cindy Wertz
Public Affairs Specialist
Wyoming State Office
(307) 775-6014
Attached was the Word Document, below.  We were a little surprised as it came from nowhere but also are pleased to note that the BLM IS reading what we are writing/posting and someone seems to be paying attention.  We have not edited the document below and I did write back to Ms. Wertz and thanked her for the update; we do know how to act civil now and then.
But Deb and I thought that we would share this rare occurrence with you as evidence that yes, you can get someone’s attention if you keep knocking on the door long enough.  Keep the Faith!” ~ R.T.

BLM SAYS IT CANNOT TRACK CATTLE ON ITS LANDS « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Washington, DC — The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) says it was an absence of “reliable data”—and not politics—that caused it to exclude consideration of commercial livestock impacts from multi-million dollar assessments of environmental conditions on Western range lands. BLM thus rejected the first scientific misconduct complaint filed against it by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER), which today released a detailed rebuttal of BLM’s self-exoneration.

Update: Citizen Investigation Exposes Evidence of Wild Horses Sold to Slaughter by BLM Contractor « Straight from the Horse's Heart

WASHINGTON (January 24, 2013)–Wild Horse Freedom Federation (WHFF) released evidence against a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) wild horse long-term holding contractor, who sold wild horses to a “kill buyer” and appears to be trafficking wild horses to slaughter. Debbie Coffey, volunteer director of Wild Horse Affairs at WHFF, uncovered evidence of the contractor selling at least 34 federally protected wild horses to an infamous kill buyer (someone who knowingly buys horses to be sold for slaughter).

Breaking News: Wild Horses Sold to Kill Buyer by BLM Contractor « Straight from the Horse's Heart

While the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has been trying to convince the public that the BLM does not sell wild horses to slaughter, Wild Horse Freedom Federation has obtained proof that a BLM Long Term Holding contractor sold wild horses directly to kill buyer Joe Simon, who is well known for sending horses to slaughter, and who owns JS Ranch (“Farms”) in Perkins, Oklahoma.

In a windfall of information, Animals’ Angels recently received over a thousand pages of documentation confirming violations and horrific treatment of horses transported to the Cavel slaughter plant in DeKalb, IL. Almost 1,100 photographs were provided along with written documentation describing the extent of the violations, injuries, and penalties. This information was provided to us after we submitted a Freedom of Information Act request on July 28, 2012 to the USDA.

OPM Chief John Berry: The Next Interior Secretary? « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Federal employees may know John Berry  as the face of the workforce in his role as director of the Office of Personnel Management.

Berry, 53, is now expected to be considered by the Obama administration to replace Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, who confirmed early Wednesday that he will leave his post in March and return to Colorado.

Read our profile of Berry in last September’s Style section.
Interior secretaries generally hail from the West, and Berry, a Rockville native, does not. But the president is under intense pressure from gay activists to appoint an openly gay secretary to his cabinet, a historic move. And Berry fits the bill.

Many of Britain’s biggest retailers were forced to pull products from their shelves yesterday as their suppliers were found to be selling beefburgers laced with horse meat.

Tesco’s were found to contain up to 29 per cent equine DNA, while Asda, Sainsbury’s and the Co-op all withdrew frozen burgers as a ‘precautionary measure’.

Declan Gregg loves all animals, but he has a special place in his heart for horses. After learning about the inhumane and cruel practice of horse slaughter, Declan decided to raise his voice. He started his blog, Children 4 Horses, to spread the word about horse advocacy issues and worked diligently with the Million Horse March campaign to collect letters from children to inspire lawmakers to end horse slaughter in America.

A Case of Colic Ushers in a Quick Dose of Reality « Straight from the Horse's Heart

A Case of Colic Ushers in a Quick Dose of Reality « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Funny how easy it is to lose sight of your center and what is truly important in life.  Terry and I live, eat and sleep amongst our equine, canine and feline charges but while picking up the sword for the health, well-being and future security of our American horses, both domestic and wild, the line began to get a bit fuzzy over what and who actually drew us into that fight in the first place and why we were there.
I received a quick kick in the pants and a steaming hot mug of reality this past week when my saddle buddy, Moose, (a young, Belgian draft/TB cross gelding) succumbed to a screaming case of colic during our recent southeast Texas cold snap.  Just such a cold spell took the life of my former trail partner, Ethan, some 5 years ago and the reality of the danger of sub-tropical horses not drinking during cold weather came galloping onto our small ranch this past Thursday.

Nevada Wild Horse Advocates Protest Horse Slaughter « Straight from the Horse's Heart

The protestors gathered in front of the legislative building near noon on Friday in Carson City.
This isn’t the first time they’ve been here, and it won’t be their last.
But their message today had to do with Nevada’s Department of Agriculture.
Its handling of the wild horses on the Virginia Range, and what they say is the department’s advocacy of horse slaughter.

2013 Ushers in New Hope for American Equines « Straight from the Horse's Heart

2013 Ushers in New Hope for American Equines « Straight from the Horse's Heart

It’s over, 2012 is nothing more than a distant memory left to be recounted in history books and comedian jokes, finished, done, stick a fork in it, outta here.

If I could go back in time, just one year, there would be a lot that I would change; many allegiances better nurtured and others severed sooner but we are not granted that option so we tighten up our cinch and ride on.  BUT, you knew that was coming, I cannot continue down the trail without a few words of thanks for those who made the past year special.
