Breaking News: New Mexico AG Gains TRO Against Proposed Horse Slaughter Plant | Straight from the Horse's Heart

Breaking News: New Mexico AG Gains TRO Against Proposed Horse Slaughter Plant | Straight from the Horse's Heart

We have just learned that New Mexico’s Attorney General, Gary King, has obtained a temporary restraining order against Valley Meats which will prevent the company from slaughtering horses until after a hearing on the AG’s lawsuit which is scheduled for this Friday.

Owners of Valley Meats and their attorney have been making sounds to the effect that they had intended to start butchering companion horses as soon as the first of the year, those plans are now null and void.

Many thanks to Attorney General Gary King for listening to not only  the citizens of the fine state of New Mexico but the 80% of Americans who do not want to see the blight of predatory horse slaughter taint their country.

A horse slaughter plant in New Mexico plans to open soon, which is mobilizing animal welfare advocates to repeat calls for a federal ban on slaughterhouses and horse meat for human consumption.

One of these opponents is an 11-year-old boy from Greenland, N.H.
Declan Gregg, who runs the blog Children 4 Horses, keeps tabs on the bills that are in committee on Capitol Hill. He has traveled to Washington three times to fight for the bills, and he and his mother, Stacie, plan to keep pressing the case in 2014.

“It’s not good for the horses, community or public safety,” Declan Gregg said in a phone interview Friday.

Straight from the Wild Horse’s Mouth – A Letter to Santa | Straight from the Horse's Heart

“It’s not only ‘Feel Good Sunday” but for Christmas this will be ‘Feel Good Week’ where we will share original equine related Christmas stories every day until the 25th  for you to ponder, enjoy and hopefully allow you to wash your mind out and gain a breath of fresh air; we all need an extended recharge.
Today’s story was sent to me last year by one of the last stallions of Twin Peaks, “Ace”, now safe and out of the BLM’s grasp.  On first read it made my eyes leak and a year later it has not only maintained it’s poignant message but it is even, perhaps, more timely at the close of 2013.  I thank Ace for his input as I believe this is one of the best things he has ever written, except for the note to the other day reminding me to share it.  Thanks buddy and the best to all this holiday season!” ~ R.T.

Carol Walker with Jane Velez-Mitchell | Straight from the Horse's Heart

Thank you to Carol Walker, Director of Field Documentation for Wild Horse Freedom Federation, and to Jane Velez-Mitchell for showing the plight of the wild horses & burros.  Thanks to ALL advocates who are pushing for shelter in ALL BLM facilities.  (Note that in this news segment, Secretary of the Interior, Sally Jewell, doesn’t mention attrition in BLM’s fuzzy math equation regarding their “estimates” of wild horses & burros on the range.)  DEMAND PROOF!  We want to see photos and videos from BLM’s  aerial population inventory flights.  THERE ARE NO “EXCESS” WILD HORSES OR BURROS, SO THE BLM CANNOT LEGALLY REMOVE THE WILD HORSES & BURROS FROM THEIR FEDERALLY PROTECTED AREAS.  And the BLM has NO PROOF or hard evidence to support their claims of the number of wild horses & burros on the range.  -  Debbie Coffey

Video: National Day of the Horse Message from Equine Advocates | Straight from the Horse's Heart

The story of Hayden, the Dun-Striped Mustang, has as many treacherous twists and turns as the Yellow Brick Road. Captured in 2009 during a cruel and unnecessary BLM round-up in the Pryor Mountains of Montana, Hayden survived capture, being uprooted and separated from his family, being auctioned off, being shipped from Montana to Colorado and then arriving at Equine Advocates Rescue & Sanctuary in Chatham, NY on October 1, 2013. The plight of America’s Wild Horses & Burros as told through Hayden’s eyes is our way of personalizing the horrendous fate of tens of thousands of Wild Equines in America today. We are most grateful to Ginger Kathrens of The Cloud Foundation and Terry Fitch of the Wild Horse Freedom Federation for their amazing and graphic photography as they witnessed Hayden’s capture firsthand. There are also breath-taking shots of Hayden with his dam (mother) when he was a foal and of him with other Mustangs when they were all still wild and free. Counting Wild Horses: An Aerial Tour of Twin Peaks Wild Horse and Burro Habitat | Straight from the Horse's Heart

“For several years Straight from the Horse’s Heart (SFTHH) and Wild Horse Freedom Federation have followed the struggles of the last remaining wild horses and burros on one of the largest HMAs in the United States; Twin Peaks that stretches across the state lines of both California and Nevada.  Besides personal visits of our own, several other wild equine advocates have been keeping an eye on what is left free on the open range, one of those advocates is Grandma Greg who has documented her findings and made them public here on SFTHH.  Her most recent installment was “Where Have All the Wild Horses and Burros Gone?” which is pretty much required reading for any advocate as it contains links to the full report and many of the preceding documentation that verifies that contrary to what the BLM alleges there are ‘NO Excess Wild Horses and Burros.’

Last week a group of advocates did an aerial assessment of what is left and we are pleased to share with you their video and ask that you click on the link at the conclusion of this post to visit their site to comment directly and encourge them for more aerial surveillance of our vanishing icons of American freedom.  Thanks to Ney Grant and http://www.lighthawk.org for making this possible.  Keep the faith!” ~ R.T.

This past week we have been following the extraordinary adventures of Wild Horse Freedom Federation‘s Carol Walker as she has endured sub-zero temperatures in an effort to capture the last images of wild horses in Salt Wells and Adobe Town where the BLM is attempting to manage the herds into total extinction.  The current operation has concluded and what Carol shares with us today are the ghostly images of 40 PZPed mares being released into another area, not their home, without their mates and without their babies…at times like these, it is difficult to say ‘Keep the Faith’.” ~ R.T.

This past weekend the public was not allowed to witness nor audit the controversial BLM helicopter wild horse stampede and roundup in the Red Desert of Wyoming.  This subversive action on the part of the federal agency so infuriated the Board and Officers of Wild Horse Freedom Federation that Advisory Board Member and noted photographer Carol Walker put our cares and concerns for the weather aside and traveled to the area in question to be the eyes and ears for WHFF and the wild horse and burro advocacy.  Below is her report along with her photographs which will be added to her stunning collection of wild equine photography at www.wildhoofbeats.com upon her return home.  Carol will cover the release of the PZPed mares and final operations before heading back, stay tuned.

Equine Whispers in the Night | Straight from the Horse's Heart

Equine Whispers in the Night | Straight from the Horse's Heart

Feel Good Sunday” takes on a special flavor for me, today, because I am home with family and friends after yet another month of globetrotting half way across the world in an effort to provide for those who I leave behind when I travel.  And as luck would have it I will be able to share Thanksgiving at our southeast Texas ranch with our equine family as well; for this I am doubly thankful as my spirit needs to be recharged in the manner that only close contact with our equine children can accomplish.

So in preparation to set my mind right and to seek out an appropriate story to share I spent some quality, private time in the barn with the boys, this morning, so that my head would be re-calibrated; and as I listened to the soft munching of hay and gentle nickers swirling around  me it became clear that I should share a story I had written several years ago, of just such a moment, a point in time that is easy to re-create and to draw upon when living with horses.  With that realization I will set my jet lagged mind free and share with you a story of a like experience pulled from the pages of our book, Straight from the Horses Heart, and go back out to enjoy the company of the characters of said book minus/plus one.  Enjoy and keep the faith, may the Force of the Horse® be with you.” ~ R.T.

Last week, a federal judge in New Mexico cleared the way for domestic slaughterhouse operators to again kill and render horses on American soil. Monday night, the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver stayed that ruling, at least temporarily, so that it could evaluate whether the Obama Administration unlawfully permitted those operators to resume the brutal practice without first complying with all relevant environmental regulations.

We are happy to announce that the Court of Appeal has granted our motion for a temporary injunction, for a short time, staying the district court’s ruling last week. But we will be fighting further this week, and should know more by week’s end.

BLM Solicits Sterilization of Wild Horses | Straight from the Horse's Heart

The BLM, with Dean Bolstad as the Program Office Point of Contact (POC), continues to waste tax dollars on experimentation on wild horses & burros, which is a clear violation of the Wild Free Roaming Horse & Burro Act of 1971.  The BLM is NOT protecting wild horses when it uses them for experimentation (under the guise of "research").

he New Mexico federal court, yesterday, extended the injunction barring USDA for inspecting horse slaughter at Rains Natural Meats of Gallatin, Missouri (and thus preventing any slaughter) until the court rules on the case, which will happen by the end of October. FRER’s case has now kept horse slaughter from starting in America for roughly three months, after keeping USDA from even considering the process for all of 2012 and the first half of this year.

Eye to the Soul by Terry FitchPatricia Haight’s FOIA response included teleconference notes between a “team” of BLM employees who talked about slaughtering wild horses, among other things.  Cindy McDonald (American Herds blog) posted Haight’s FOIA documents (including the BLM’s discussion of alternative management options) in her library.

BLM & Forest Service Experimenting on Wild Horses | Straight from the Horse's Heart

At the upcoming BLM National Wild Horse & Burro Advisory Board meeting, the board will likely bring up the subject of the field spaying of wild mares.
It is important to keep in mind that the BLM and Forest Service are partnering in EXPERIMENTING on our wild horses (and, in the case of the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, “feral” horses).  This advisory board was even discussing tubal ligation for mares (which seems to have been in trials in 2004).
Below is a presentation seemingly by LEON PIELSTICK, DVM, the veterinarian who has been conducting experiments on the field spaying of mares, and it shows (possibly Leon Pielstick himself) spaying a mare at a wild horse sanctuary.  There are also photos of a wild stallion during a vasectomy procedure, presumably at Sheldon.

Horse and Camel fossils found in western Oklahoma date back millions of years, scientist says | Straight from the Horse's Heart

CHEYENNE — An oil company drilling in western Oklahoma has stumbled across a deposit of camel and horse fossils that date back roughly five million to 12 million years, scientists who’ve examined the remains say.
The fossils, which belong to long-extinct species of camel and horse, were found in July in the Packsaddle Wildlife Management Area.
An alert heavy-machine operator working for Apache Corp., the Houston-based oil company drilling in Packsaddle, discovered the long-hidden fossils after he’d cleared away roughly 20 feet of earth.

Exclusive: Wild Horse and Wild Burro Good News and Bad News from Twin Peaks HMA | Straight from the Horse's Heart

Exclusive: Wild Horse and Wild Burro Good News and Bad News from Twin Peaks HMA | Straight from the Horse's Heart

Last weekend several experienced wildlife observers with binoculars and long-distance camera lens thoroughly combed 77 miles of the Twin Peaks Herd Management Area (HMA) and found only 27 wild horses and 5 wild burros.  Is this good news or bad news?  This is good news for those few wild horses and burros that remain on their legally designated land, but bad news for the Twin Peaks HMA as a whole.  The forage has grown back from last summer’s fire and there is an abundance of food as was obvious by the condition of the few vigorous and healthy wild horses and burros that were observed, but this is still a small and discouraging number of wild horses and burros. This survey is consistent with previous surveys and documentation supporting the impacts of an enormous and devastating roundup in 2010. There seems to be few remaining wild horses and burros in the Twin Peaks HMA. In our two days of ground observation the BLM’s mantra of the term “excess” was on our minds as we traveled numerous miles; most of which had no wild horses or burros or even signs of wild horses and burros.  This public land is set aside by Congress principally for wild horses and burros, but there are very few that remain since the roundup of 2010.  It is hard to believe when the BLM says there are 1,750 out here again…

But today is different. Today, I was inspired to opine by a thing of great rarity in our struggle; a well researched article. It appeared in the Saint Louis Post Dispatch titled Horse slaughterhouse plans stalled in Missouri and it convinced me we are winning this struggle, at least for the moment.

BLM Sells Land to Water Guzzlers During Drought | Straight from the Horse's Heart

A recent Elko Daily Free Press article titled “Drought causes BLM to reduce grazing, other targeted actions,” stated that “In Nevada, about 60 percent of the state has been in severe or extreme drought since January.”
The article continued with “‘Since last fall and winter, we have been working with grazers across the West in anticipation of tough conditions related to drought,’ said Neil Kornze, BLM principal deputy director…’
‘As drought conditions continue, wild horses, livestock, and wildlife that rely on rangeland forage and water will face extremely challenging conditions that may leave them in very poor condition.  We are taking action to address these situations as quickly and as effectively as we can, but our options are increasingly limited by conditions on the land,’ he added.”
Apparently, the BLM’s options don’t include any thought of curtailing the lease/sale of public lands for oil & gas exploration and development or for mining, which use a lot of water.
On June 28, 2013, the BLM Ely District office issued a Preliminary Environmental Assessment for their upcoming December 2013 Oil and Gas Lease Sale, which is offering 399,873 acres of public lands in their district.

Last night, July 3rd 2005, I entered Terry’s office to shut down the computer prior to heading for bed.  Everyone else was tucked away and I was just doing the last minute security sweep when my eyes caught the bright glare of a fireworks rocket heading for the stars in the northern sky.  When it reached it’s predestined point of suicide, it erupted into a brilliant display of red and blue stars cascading downward across the acres of millet that separate us from a distant subdivision.  I walked closer to the window when, suddenly, the noise of the explosion reached our farm.  BOOM!  As the sound trailed off, another took its place -the thunder of hooves.  The horses were freaked.

Last summer my wife, Terry, and I trekked across Outer Mongolia on horseback in a quest to view and observe the re-introduced, primitive wild horse, the Takhi. (As featured in the May issue of Horseback Magazine. and in TrueCowboy Magazine)

This summer we are in Tibet, the second largest horse culture in the world behind Outer Mongolia, where we have spent a week on horseback and another week in a 4-wheel drive in an effort to reach Base Camp at Mt. Everest.  (Which we finally made on the 27th, another “Bucket List” quest completed)

Study of Equine Abuse and Neglect Patterns Produces Surprising Findings | Straight from the Horse's Heart

EWA (Chicago) – The Equine Welfare Alliance today released a statistical study on the rates of equine abuse and neglect across the US since 2000. The research examined equine abuse statistics from Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Maine and Oregon.
Historical records of the number of cases of equine abuse and neglect from these states was correlated with three potential causes; the rate of equine slaughter (or lack of it), unemployment and the cost of hay.
Surprisingly, the researchers found that the rate of abuse has been in decline in four of the six states since 2008. Five of the six states had shown a spike in abuse and neglect around 2008 and two have shown a significant increase in the past two years.

On May 23, 2013, several wranglers at the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Palomino Valley facility seemed to be too lazy to saddle up their horses, so all 3 of those big boys crammed themselves into a pick-up truck and drove it around inside a pen of wild horses like they were in a Monster truck event, and what may be a government owned vehicle even fishtailed – yee haa!!  Apparently, this was supposed to have been an effort to separate out a paint horse from the other horses.

Public criticism of roundups is not limited to wild horses. The Bureau of Land Management also conducts annual “gather” operations to remove “excess” wild burros from herd areas in the West.
In this video, advocates for the wild burros document “aggressive” roundup practices, including a helicopter hitting and flipping over a burro in the California desert in 2009 and a BLM contract wrangler manhandling a reluctant burro during a 2008 roundup in Arizona.

2 Million Bucks: BLM is Mismanaging Wild Horses and Burros – ‘DOINK’ | Straight from the Horse's Heart

The long anticipated National Academy of Science‘s National Research Council’s multimillion dollar, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) commissioned, pre-publication report was released, yesterday, and instead of being the death sentence for protected wild horses and burros, as we all expected, it turned out to have a grain of insight while missing the point in most major areas of concern.

Although the panel of experts noted that the BLM’s helicopter roundup assault on the wild horses and burros is not working, DOINK, they totally missed the destruction to public lands by private, BLM favored welfare cattle who out number wild horse hundreds to one.  Ginger Kathrens of the Cloud Foundation summed it up in a recent interview with USA Today;

”How can you worry about a herd of 100 horses when you might have 10,000 cows grazing in the same region?” she asked.

There are an estimated 8.9 million private cattle and calves on public lands with only about 18,000 – 20,000 wild horses and burros still remaining with OVER 50,000 captured equines in corrals and on BLM funded private holding areas.

Video Report: Equine Family and Livelihood Lost in Oklahoma Tornado | Straight from the Horse's Heart

BARTOW COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -Things just aren’t right at Jon Ellis’ stables.
“Now there is no one in here to take care of,” Ellis said.

Ellis and his wife Jennifer Short raised and trained eight race horses at their Bartow County horse farm. But seven of them were with Ellis in Oklahoma last month when a tornado ripped through the area.

“I was just praying as I ran, praying that it would miss our barn and it just went right down the middle of our barn,” Ellis said.

Ellis was on his way back to the barn when the tornado hit. He said he’ll never forget what he saw when he got back.

“Just dead horses laying everywhere. The most awful deaths you can imagine, I mean it wasn’t like walking in a pasture and finding one died of old age, they died horrific deaths,” said Ellis.

More than 100 horses died that day. Ellis and Short said it was like losing a family member.

NM Citizen Speaks Out: ‘Horse Slaughter is Slap in the Face to Human Spirituality’ | Straight from the Horse's Heart

Regarding the controversy over a horse slaughter plant opening in New Mexico, people are missing the point. There is no such thing as humane horse slaughter. Pro horse slaughter people are dead wrong. Their disgraceful misinformation and absurd falsehoods are effective and designed to mislead.

According to veterinarian, Dr. Lester Friedlander, former USDA slaughter inspector, it is an indisputable fact, there is no such thing as humane horse slaughter. The public has been duped into believing this outrageous lie, because it promotes acceptance.

Seventy-five percent of New Mexicans claim they belong to a religious community, over half of them identify with being Catholic. It’s not contrary for people of faith to reconcile and accept extreme brutality and unspeakable violence against one of God’s most magnificent creatures, instead of looking upon the horse with awe and wonder?

Memorial Weekend Video Special: The Horse Soldiers of 9/11 | Straight from the Horse's Heart

It was the news the world breathlessly waited for immediately after the 9/11 terror attacks: a report of the first American troops on the ground in Afghanistan.

All at once the world’s attention focused on an iconic photo of those Special Operations Forces doing something no American military had done in nearly a century: They rode horses into combat.

Their secret mission: secure northern Afghanistan by advising the warring tribal factions that formed the Northern Alliance. During the 2011 Parade on November 11, a new monument to these men — and to all Americans in uniform — made its way down New York City’s famed Fifth Avenue on the way to its final home, a stone’s throw from Ground Zero.

Oklahoma Tornado Killed at Least 150 horses | Straight from the Horse's Heart

In a sobering count, more than 150 horses died as a result of the violent tornado that swept through Moore, Okla., on Monday. The number represents the entire community of farms that sit on the southern border of Oklahoma City, including Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses who were based at Celestial Acres Training Center.

Several organizations coordinating horse-rescue efforts, as well as local veterinarians and horse owners themselves, determined the number, said Joe Lucas, executive vice president of the Thoroughbred Racing Association of Oklahoma.

“We’ve counted, unfortunately, 150 head or more that have been found [dead], were killed, or had to be put down,” Lucas said. “And that’s not just Celestial Acres. That’s the Moore area. That’s what we’ve gotten up to.”

Oklahoma Tornado: 34 horses Found Alive at Celestial Acres Training Center | Straight from the Horse's Heart

A representative of the Celestial Acres Training Center in Moore, Okla., said 34 horses had been found alive as of Wednesday following Monday’s tornado, which packed winds of nearly 200 miles an hour.
The number of racehorses lost in the storm has been difficult to assess. Several trainers familiar with Celestial Acres estimate at least 80 horses were based there at the time of the storm. Tony Vann, a spokesperson for Glenn Orr and his son Tom, who own the facilities, said he is unable to give a “finite number” of horses stabled at the training center in part because those renting stalls were able to “come and go” as business dictated. As for the racehorse death toll, Vann said there is no accurate number that can be reported.

ALBANY — Fewer stories in horse racing have had higher highs and lower lows than that of Ferdinand.
The 1986 Kentucky Derby winner banked more than $3.7 million in a stellar career and went to the breeding shed in 1988. However, the champion thoroughbred was slaughtered in Japan in 2002, setting off outrage in the horse racing community.
That story was repeated Wednesday by Assemblyman Jim Tedisco, one of several state politicians who spoke out in support of a bill that would criminalize the transport of horses for slaughter in the Empire State.

Up to 100 horses are feared dead after a massive tornado ripped through the Oklahoma City area.
Authorities say two people are known to have died in twisters that ravaged the area, and six are reported to have died in Texas as storms generated a series of deadly twisters.
Oklahoma and other Midwest areas remain on high alert, with fears the storm system could generate further twisters.
KFOR.com, Oklahoma’s Channel 4, in a live feed earlier today, reported on the devastation at the 106-acre Orr Family Farm in Moore.
The farm and an adjoining horse training and agistment facility took a massive hit from the tornado.

It seems that horse slaughterers are incapable of preventing horse meat from mingling with their other products. If it can happen there, it can happen here. CHATHAM, NY, April 22, 2013 – On the cusp of the 2013 Annual American Equine Summit hosted by the New York-based national equine protection organization Equine Advocates, the call to ban horse slaughter permanently has received much needed support from Robert Redford.

Actor, director, environmentalist and founder of the Sundance Festival, Redford wrote a letter to Equine Advocates President Susan Wagner to support the unequivocal stance that horse slaughter must be banned in the US.  “Horses are acquired for slaughter without disclosure and often through fraud and misrepresentation.  The entire slaughter process is cruel, inhumane and perpetuates abuse and neglect without consequences, in addition to condoning a violation of our nation’s cruelty laws,” said Redford.  “As Americans, we have the right to oppose both the return of horse slaughter to the US and the transport of our wild and domestic equines to other countries for the purpose of slaughter.”

Terry asked what was wrong, Moose did underneath me, too, as he could feel the tension in my legs and seat.

It’s Not Cool To Be Cruel | Straight from the Horse's Heart

It’s Not Cool To Be Cruel | Straight from the Horse's Heart

I have been thinking about how people think that if guys like animals that it makes them “uncool” or “whimpy”. The message out there seems to be that is ok to be cruel to animals if you’re a guy. I don’t think this is right at all and I know that that is not the truth. It is VERY COOL to like and help animals, even if you’re a guy!

I decided to start a new project and I need your help! I went to the New Hampshire SPCA today to talk with guys I met there to see what they thought about it. I also brought a sign I made that says “REAL MEN are kind to animals” and asked if I could take their picture. Everyone was impressed with my idea and they were happy to help and let my professional photographer (my mom), take their picture! My idea is to use the pictures for a special project and here is where YOU can help! You can do the same thing I did, make a sign and talk to guys about how they feel about animals and ask them if you can take their picture. I bet you will be surprised by the answers you hear and it will be great to spread the word, that “IT’S NOT COOL TO BE CRUEL”. Women can help me too! Hold up your sign and let everyone know that you think *REAL* Men Are Kind To Animals too! Please post your pictures and stories here on Children 4 Horses, so I can use them for my project :-) I have set up a special album on my page for all the pictures titled “IT’S NOT COOL TO BE CRUEL” and I can’t wait to add yours!

Five states looking to snag millions of U.S. taxpayer dollars to inspect horse meat plants may want to rethink their plans in light of a precipitous drop in demand.

The drop is a reflection of the number of horses going from the U.S. to Mexico for slaughter. That number plummeted 62% in the first quarter of 2013 following a steady two-year increase, USDA figures show.

Just a week ago Petside featured an article about the high probability of horse slaughter facilities soon opening in the United States to produce meat for human consumption.

In 2006 Congress defunded USDA horse and horse meat inspection, closing the doors of the three remaining foreign-owned slaughter plants producing meat for human consumption which was exported to Europe and other countries outside the United States. However, in 2011, Congress stripped the defunding language for USDA horse and horse meat inspection, leaving the doors wide open for slaughter facilities in the United States to start killing horses for their meat for humans.

An employee of a New Mexico company that has sparked outrage for its plans to slaughter horses is being investigated for animal cruelty in connection with a video in which he taunts animal welfare advocates while killing a horse.

Tim Sappington, 54, may face charges over the video, said Bobby Pierce, the deputy director of the New Mexico Livestock Board, an Albuquerque-based law enforcement agency. Sappington is the only employee of Valley Meat Co. near Roswell, which is seeking to become the first company to run a horse-slaughter plant in the U.S. since 2007.

US Horsemeat Banned in EU | Straight from the Horse's Heart

Chicago (EWA) – Since Congress lifted the ban on USDA inspections of horse meat, several small shuttered cattle slaughter plants have clamored for the USDA to provide horse meat inspections. Ricardo De Los Santos of Valley Meats, a New Mexico plant, went as far as to sue the USDA for not providing the service. The attorney for Valley Meats has announced it will be opening in three weeks.

Unfortunately for those wishing to bring horse slaughter back to the US, they will have to do so without the ability to sell to the EU, the main market for US horse meat. The Equine Welfare Alliance has received confirmation from EU authorities that “by virtue of Commission decision 2011/163/EU the US is not authorized to export horsemeat to the EU.”

“Rep. Skye McNiel said that gain would be shared equally by all the state’s horse auctioneers and is not substantial compared to the financial gain to the state’s horse owners who are seeking an avenue to dispose of animals that have lost their use.”

Although the legislation passed the Senate committee, animal rights activists such as the Humane Society of the United States say the bill legalizing horse slaughter in Oklahoma is nothing more than a “grizzly crutch.”
