BLM Pilot Conduct Ruled “Inhumane” at Triple B Wild Horse Hearing « Straight from the Horse's Heart
HOUSTON, (WHFF) – Yesterday, August 30th 2011 in a Reno Nevada Federal Courtroom the Honorable Judge Howard McKibben granted a Temporary Restraining Order against the continuation of documented helicopter pilot conduct at the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Triple B wild horse roundup in Eastern Nevada. Citing his authority as a Federal Judge to enjoin an agency’s conduct where their actions have been demonstrated to be “in violation of an Act” Judge McKibben issued the TRO.

We attempt to give you something on Sundays to recharge your batteries and have been remiss over the past few weeks as there just has not been that much in the way of great news to relate and we sincerely do not want to blur the focus we are attempting to keep before our readership regarding our efforts to stop the inhumanity of the BLM’s handling of our wild horses. But today we have a little comedy piece that ties in nicely with the great article published earlier this week by investigative reporter Debra Coffey. If you have yet to read it, please click (HERE) to do so.

As the helicopters fly, the phone lines hum and the social networks scream there is one voice that continually and unwaveringly whispers in our ears about the fate of our wild horses. There is no ego in her tone or glory sought in her words just the hurt and pain of witnessing cruelty and suffering, day in and day out. Quietly, sometimes crying, she shares her observations for the day as our souls wrestle with the guilt and feeling of impotence; Laura Leigh is there and we are not.

Thursday the founder of Wild Horse Education.org (WHE) and VP of Wild Horse Freedom Federation (WHFF) Laura Leigh filed for a Temporary Restraining Order against the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) helicopter driven wild horse stampede in Nevada’s Triple-B complex. This action comes only one day after Leigh, agent for WHFF, filed a formal complaint alleging that the BLM violates its own standard of humane care for the management of America’s wild horses and burros. Thousands of photographs and hours of video have shocked the U.S. public regarding the overly aggressive and inhumane practices utilized by contractors of the BLM.

The BLM uses the fly-over in its Herd Management Areas( HMAs ) to tell us the numbers of horses in an HMA and to tell us of a need to gather and the quantity of horses to be captured and removed. The fly-over is done by those who would do the gather and profit from it . No instruments are used to verify their numbers and location though instruments are available such as photos and GPS tracking and have been repeatedly suggested to be installed.

Here is Wyoming’s pitch-pure tourism advertisement now playing on television. It’s called “Don’t Fence Me In” and it features beautiful natural scenes, including a herd of horses running upon the open prairie. Before I dive briefly back into the story of what the Bureau of Land Management, state officials, and ranching industry executives are doing right now, today, to two Wyoming wild horse herds, I ask you to please spend 30 seconds watching this video. It animates the issues at hand more than I ever could with words.

We try our best not to promote stupid, hence we have not written about "Slaughterhouse" Sue Wallis as of late, but every now and then a written piece of trash blows by that just screams out for attention and this morning one blew in with a gust of smelly air from Lake Havasu City, AZ. An editorial was printed, without even giving away the author's name for good reason, that placed the blame for a burro's death in an auto collision squarely upon the 'invasive' burro...it shouldn't have been there so now there is a need to get rid of all those potential impediments to traffic, forth with.

On our blog we attempt to either post or write a positive and, hopefully, uplifting article for publication on Sunday. It is our hope that everyone has the opportunity to rest, relax and recharge their emotional and spiritual batteries before heading into another week of survival in a world turned upside down. The past two Sundays nothing, absolutely not one word has been published at “Straight from the Horse’s Heart“.

Apparently the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has indicated that it is requesting public nominations to fill three national Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board positions, which are set to expire on Jan. 8, 2012. Nominations are for a three-year term and are allegedly needed to represent three categories of interest: wild horse and burro advocacy, veterinary medicine (equine science), and general public interest (with special knowledge of wild horses and burros, wildlife, animal husbandry, or natural resource management). To date, only dedicated special interest personnel have been selected all of which, obviously, do NOT have the best interest of the wild horses and burros in mind.

Wild Horse Education has published the draft report on operations at the Triple B roundup in Nevada.
The report contains photographs and video of the roundup during foaling season that has already taken the lives of 9 horses. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) “gather report” claims these foal deaths have been due to abnormalities in the young horses. Documentation obtained shows otherwise.

This beautiful horse broke out (jumped the panel after capture at the trap) and stood by the jute… moving forward and back… forward and back… as his family loaded.
After the trailer (with his mares) went past him he shot up the hill behind us… then eyed the trap from the other side of the hill calling to the babies… he moved off as vehicles came in but stopped as a trailer came back up the road… and called to see if his family had come back.

It is a loosely written rule that articles and stories published to our blog on Sundays are to be inspirational and, with any luck, uplifting. If things go well in the world of equine advocacy a good news story will pop up in the press or, better yet, a kind reader will forward some little jewel that is a perfect fit for the special Sunday slot. For the past several weeks, no such good news has been forthcoming and the Straight from the Horse’s Heart blog has gone dark on the last day of the week.
