No “Unwanted” Retired Race Horses « Straight from the Horse's Heart

No “Unwanted” Retired Race Horses « Straight from the Horse's Heart

When a thoroughbred thunders past cheering racetrack crowds, it does so with the help of an off-track entourage of trainers, handlers and owners providing constant, doting care.
But for the horses no longer making money on the racetrack or in the breeding barn — when they become too old, injured or too slow to race — that attention quickly evaporates. And their future becomes anything but certain.

Some Horse Sense at Last? « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Officially, anyway, the news that the BLM is finally willing to consider a public-private partnership with wild horse advocate Madeleine Pickens is a good thing. After all — as reported in this space many times — the federal wild horse and burro program is a dismal failure. So any proposal that might reinvigorate the program, do a better job of caring for the mustangs and the public range, while also saving millions of taxpayer dollars, is a step in the right direction, even if it is a small step. In that sense, the BLM deserves a round of applause.

Back in 2005 when the Belgians were murdering American horses in both Texas and Illinois the Wall Street Journal published an article on the subject which the then mayor of one of the Texas towns blemished and wounded by a bloody slaughterhouse took issue with.  That mayor was the well respected and talented Paula Bacon of Kaufman, Texas.  Mayor Bacon’s fight with the foreign scourge that bloodied America’s soil is epic and she will forever be remembered as one of America’s great and iconic heroines.

Washington - Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., brought some celebrity power to the Capitol Wednesday to build support for her legislation that would prohibit inhumane killing of American horses for food. Actress Bo Derek, best known for the 1979 romantic comedy,”10,” and speaking for the Animal Welfare Institute, pushed for passage of the bill. So did Amy Nelson, singer Willie Nelson’s daughter, and Raelyn Nelson, his granddaughter, saying they were speaking on Nelson’s behalf and his love for horses.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has created for themselves yet another PR nightmare with the new appointments of Anti-Horse/Pro-Slaughter activists to their beleaguered and special interest Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Council.  Self proclaimed wild horse hater Callie Hendrickson did her homework and is well aware of the massive public outcry over her appointment to the board as she has spent the last several years of her life trying to wipe out the last of the federally protected free roaming wild horses in Colorado.  With all of the bad press, she didn’t step across the line in her self-indulgent introduction, today, at day one of the biased BLM meeting being held in Reno, NV.

Pickens Responds to Horse Hating Welfare Rancher in CBS Video « Straight from the Horse's Heart

When the pro-slaughter crowd, led by the likes of Demar Dahl, talk about past practices as they applied to the management of our wild horses, or the approach perhaps more appropriately referred to as the, if we can’t eat it or make money off of it, let’s kill it, it is important to note they are talking about a time in our distant past.  Their reflections speak volumes about the situation we find ourselves in, with over 40,000 wild horses in pens, a senseless gather policy that is destroying one of the Nation’s valuable resources, and a general lack of a coherent strategy to manage our wild horse populations.  None of this is what Congress had in mind when they passed an Act 40 years ago to manage AND protect the wild horses in the Western United States.

The Sunday Trail Ride « Straight from the Horse's Heart

It’s Sunday and it has been a good week for the horses with the dark-side suffering multiple defeats and currently in hiding collectively licking some very deep wounds.  But as the lost and confused wander without clear direction we move forward with purpose, dignity and truth as our shield.  It is important for us to look around and re-energize ourselves not only with the strength of our numbers and great diversity but with the clear knowledge in our heart of why we fight for those who cannot speak for themselves, the horses.
Below is a story that has been around for years and I have danced with it many times but each time I read it, edit it and tell it I am healed as it speaks to the core of why we are where we are in the battle to save the American equine, both domestic and wild.  We speak from the heart, we speak for the horse and we speak in concert with each other.  Keep the faith and thank-you for all that you do.” ~ R.T.
