Sudden Death of Show Pony Clouds Image of Elite Pursuit « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Early on the morning of May 26, Kristen Williams and her daughter, Katie, arrived at a barn on the grounds of the Devon Horse Show, where elite competitors in full dress have entertained spectators for the last century on Philadelphia’s Main Line.
Ms. Williams had paid thousands of dollars to lease a pony for Katie to ride in a hunter competition, a 12th birthday present. Soon after arriving, their trainer left to administer an injection to a nearby pony, Humble, that Katie’s friend, also celebrating her 12th birthday, was scheduled to ride shortly.

A Wild Horse & Burro Christmas Story « Straight from the Horse's Heart

He checked the time again; not an easy maneuver as he had to take his right glove off, shove the left cuff of his parka up, peel back the wrist band of his left glove and then hit the back-light button on his Casio $19.99 special.  Only bought the stupid thing because of the digital thermometer feature it offered and now he wished it didn’t have it as it chilled his insides just looking at the numbers, 33 degrees inside the protection of his parka.

Wild Horse & Burro Deaths are Disguised by the BLM
SAN FRANCISCO (December 13, 2012)–In honor of the National Day of the Horse, Protect Mustangs calls for an end to cruel roundups of native wild horses. The California based conservation group is circulating a Change.org petition to Congress to De-fund and Stop the Roundups. The roundups are deadly and theBureau of Land Management (BLM) is skewing the death count. The BLM emphasizes preexisting conditions so Congress won’t realize how many indigenous wild horses are being killed as a result of the roundups.

Wild Horse Cruelty too Obscene in Nevada « Straight from the Horse's Heart

LAS VEGAS — (December 12, 2012)  Calls to boycott Nevada are emerging on social media following widespread coverage of an ugly incident in Northern Nevada involving wild horses being trapped by state officials. The reports document the continued removal of wild horses, not by the Bureau of Land Management, but by the Nevada Department of Agriculture. Adding fuel to the fire, after the wild horses are trapped they are sold through livestock auctioning where they are in danger of being purchased by kill-buyers. In recent months the public’s outcry to save wild horses from slaughter was noticed by the BLM; a policy change limiting the number of horses that can be sold to one buyer has just been announced.

United Horsemen, which is pushing to build a horse slaughter facility outside Hermiston, Oregon, requested the city hand over all public records about the facility.

Suspicious that the city received support from the Humane Society and other animal rights groups, Dave Duquette of United Horsemen requested the records and all documents pertaining to himself and horse slaughter, including any emails on the subject.

Guest Opinion: Wild Horse Horror « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Guest Opinion: Wild Horse Horror « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Our wild horses are on the edge of a planned extinction by the Bureau of Land Management(BLM) because it has chosen corporate socialism over the interest of the American taxpayer.
The American people must demand that the BLM stop wild horse round-ups immediately and require an independent investigation of their blatant mismanagement and betrayal of our nation’s magnificent wild mustangs. “Ken Salazar should be proud,” says filmmaker Ginger Kathrens of the Secretary of the Interior. “This is an Advisory Board that Salazar has created to manage wild horses to extinction.”

Straight from the Wild Horse’s Mouth: A Letter to Santa « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Straight from the Wild Horse’s Mouth: A Letter to Santa « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Dear Santa-
I am an old wild stallion.  I am told that I am one of the last Twin Peaks stallions.  I have had a wonderful life as Mother Nature planned for me from the very day I was born.  I lived the first 22 years free and wild and learned from my sire, dam, siblings and family band what was good for me to eat and where to find the fresh water springs that are hidden in the hills.  I romped and played with the young colts and fillies in my extended family.  Under the watchful protection of our family members, we young horses frolicked in the snow and creeks and rested in the shade of the old Juniper trees in the heat of the summer. Life was very good.  I later grew to be a healthy, robust and compassionate herd stallion with beautiful loyal mares and amusing, vigorous offspring.  Although I now have a good “retirement” life in a sanctuary with other displaced animals, my life in the wild was perfect for a wild one like me!

Racetrack Drugs Put Europe Off U.S. Horse Meat « Straight from the Horse's Heart

PARIS — For decades, American horses, many of them retired or damaged racehorses, have been shipped to Canada and Mexico, where it is legal to slaughter horses, and then processed and sold for consumption in Europe and beyond.
Lately, however, European food safety officials have notified Mexican and Canadian slaughterhouses of a growing concern: The meat of American racehorses may be too toxic to eat safely because the horses have been injected repeatedly with drugs.

Nevada Wild Horses could be Destined to Slaughter in Days « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Nevada Wild Horses could be Destined to Slaughter in Days « Straight from the Horse's Heart

“Yesterday we ran a brief story with photos of a 3 month old foal being abused at a Nevada Department of Agriculture bait trap on private property.  As the day progressed Reno area advocates began to write and comment on what they had witnessed and we corrected a few errors in the story but the point and the problem never shifted or dimmed.  The concern and anger generated by the photos fueled the biggest number of hits this blog has ever seen in a single day; thousands and thousands of concerned Americans logged in.  Frustration is so thick you can cut it with a knife.

This, folks, is beyond serious.  We at Wild Horse Freedom Federation are currently working a behind the scenes legal project to shut down the BLM‘s rapid desimation of wild horse & burros on federal public lands.  We are not chasing individual roundups with TROs as they just don’t work and we have abounded access and humane care issues as, at this rate, they are only a distraction and moot as there won’t even be any wild horses if we do not stop the roundups and do so quickly.  But our hearts are torn to pieces over what is happening to these Virginia range “state” horses as these captives go directly to auction and can end up in the hands of kill buyers within just a few days or weeks.  This is the fear and this also the reality.  These true wild horses are facing a death sentence, right now.

Please spend a few moments and read several of the comments that folks have made and then make a call or fax as outlined below.  Maybe with enough heat, even from outside of the state, Nevada officials will listen and enter into productive talks, with the knowledgeable advocates who are speaking below, and seek a humane solution versus slaughtering these horses for human consumption abroad.
Thanks to all those who care and lend their voices to those who cannot speak.” ~ R.T.

Infamous BLM Advisory Board Wild Horse Hater Tries to Spin the Truth « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Callie Hendrickson is a member of the Colorado Cow Club that has partnered with the BLM in it’s effort to zero out the West Douglas herd in northwest Colorado.  Wild Horse Freedom Federation, the Colorado Wild Horse and Burro Coalition, the Cloud FoundationFront Range Equine RescueHabitat for Horses and private citizen plaintiffs have been responsible for keeping the West Douglas horses free.  To date, this has been an unprecedented success but a MEMBER of the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board is active in trying to end, forever, the existence of this herd.  That speaks volumes to the “stacked deck” theory of the BLM’s Board.  Many thanks to our plaintiffs, donors and sponsors for supporting this TRUE and LEGITIMATE win by these unified, registered 501(c)3 organizations.  The horses of West Douglas run free thanks to your concern”  ~ R.T.
