Horses are an important part of our history…We built a Nation on their back…conquered and tilled the land with them, fought and won wars with them, created the first postal and transportation system with them.  –   Are we now going to slaughter them for foreign consumption?
Discussing the plight of horses and the legislation regarding horse slaughter, are:

As part of its responsibility to manage and protect wild horses and burros, the Bureau of Land Management, in collaboration with the USDA Forest Service (FS), is soliciting bids for several contracts that will help manage wild horses and burros located across the western United States.  The contracts are for a new bait trapping method that is intended to relieve areas of excess wild horses and burros where helicopter drive trapping is not an effective method.  The bids are the first of their kind, in that they involve six zones across the West, with a potential for multiple contractors simultaneously bait trapping animals over an extended period of time.

BLM Puts Public in Holding « Straight from the Horse's Heart

After the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) rounds up our wild horses off of our public lands, they corral them in short term and long term holding facilities. In many instances, the horses are forever removed from public access.
In what seems to be BLM’s attempt to avoid bad publicity for denying public access and lacking transparency, the BLM may throw the public a few crumbs and offer a rare and very limited “dog and pony show” tour of one of the facilities.
Now, instead of letting us (members of the public) who are paying for this fiasco and for their salaries) walk along the paths, as they did in the past, they want to round us up and hold us within the confines of a wagon.

CNN Losses Credibility with Story on “Eating Donkeys” « Straight from the Horse's Heart

There is a lot of weird crap floating around the internet, so much so that if you give it much notice it can set your head to spinning but when a major media outlet is so lame as to pick up and regurgitate sickening perversion and tout it as news or a topic of interest it begins to make one wonder where the world made the wrong turn.

Recently, CNN’s “Eatocracy” published an article about Andrew Zimmern’s “5 Foods that can change the World”.  You know Zimmern, he is the host for that TV show on the Travel Channel called Bizarre Foods that no one watches.  I, for one, spend 7 out of 12 months in foreign countries and just can’t wait to get back to the U.S. to eat something that I can identify and don’t have to go to Biology class to recognize (watch out for  fried scorpion, sauteed jellyfish, duck’s feet, fungus, stuffed pig ears and bush meat).  So I don’t think ole Simmern has much up on me as my major concern is monitoring, carefully, what passes past my lips as the bulk of where I travel has no good ole, western, sit down toilets.

The community’s resounding rejection of the proposal put the lie to Wallis’s prior claim that “the folks in Missouri are 100 percent on board with what we’re trying to do and how we’re trying to do it.”
Some people want to become firefighters, to help people in the developing world, to open up a legitimate business, or to serve their country, in one form or another. As for Sue Wallis, she just seems to want to help kill horses. It’s hard to know at any given time whether she is operating as an elected official, a rancher, an investor, or a prospective manager of a slaughter plant. For her, it seems that all roads lead to an equine abattoir.

Mountain Grove, MO (EWA) – A much publicized proposal to locate a horse slaughter plant in Mountain Grove, Missouri was soundly rejected by the Mountain Grove town council tonight. The meeting was attended by a capacity crowd of about 300, with many people being turned away and others sitting in areas where they could not see or hear.

The plan, proposed by Sue Wallis of Unified Equine, was to use land just east of the town of Mountain Grove to build a facility to slaughter horses. Wallis had claimed that she chose the location because people in the area were “100% behind what we are doing and 100% behind how we are going to do it.”
