What Makes Us Different? « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Money, like religion and politics, is an extremely personal and intimate commodity; as well it should be. We, as humans, come to terms with an employer and offer to sell segments of our precious time here on this earth in return for money; but it is what we do with that money that makes the difference in the quality and significance of our lives.

Another Win in Saving Colorado Wild Horse Herd from BLM Eradication « Straight from the Horse's Heart

A federal court rejected the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) request to dismiss or limit a suit brought by a consortium of wild horse advocacy groups and concerned citizens to save the West Douglas wild horse herd. Although the BLM withdrew their 2010 plans to decimate this northwest Colorado wild horse herd early in 2011, the advocacy groups have remained vigilant in their stance to have the Court decide whether BLM has the legal authority to zero out a herd. By her ruling, Judge Rosemary Collyer agreed that Plaintiffs could proceed with this claim and stated...

Animal Law Coalition Responds to GAO Horse Slaughter Report « Straight from the Horse's Heart

The Government Accountability Office has issued its report, GAO 11-228, on action needed to address unintended consequences of the 2007 closing of domestic slaughter facilities. A principal recommendation: “Congress may wish to consider instituting an explicit ban on the domestic slaughter of horses and export of U.S. horses intended for slaughter in foreign countries.”

GAO Releases Alleged Leaked Horse Slaughter Report « Straight from the Horse's Heart

(HOUSTON) – SFTHH – The long awaited report from the federal Government Accountability Office was released on June 22, 2011. Allegedly leaked and discussed during the controversial, failed horse slaughter festival, held in Las Vegas in early January, equine advocates were bracing for a compromised accounting and they were not far off the mark. Without any baseline of comparable markets the report acknowledges the fall in prices of equine sales since the closer of foreigner owned horse slaughter plants in the U.S. since 2007 but fails to recognize the parallel fiscal crisis the global economy entered into at during the same time frame. There is no reference or comparison to the dive in livestock prices nor an indication of essential industries, such as housing and auto, that had tanked and have yet to recover.

Why Live Only to Eat a Horse? « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Why Live Only to Eat a Horse? « Straight from the Horse's Heart

If you are observant you may be blessed with seeing many spectacular sights as we slowly float and paddle down the river that we refer to as life. Of course, there are a multitude of stunning vistas that grace the shore line if we only take the time to focus and absorb the beauty and traveling with us, floating on the life giving waters of the river, are many souls and personalities that shine and amuse with their wonder and grace. But every now and then the glistening waters become polluted with the evil sewage of human greed and blood lust. Sometimes that evil is so intense and focused that it manifests itself into human excrement that fouls the air we breathe and sticks to the water line of our life’s vessel as we paddle to get beyond it and into the clear water downstream. And as we paddle we often feel a bump or a “doink” as we run over the floating sewage and strike a large floating patch of crap and today we have been bumped and “doinked” a couple of times by the floating turd many of us know as “Slaughterhouse” Sue Wallis.

Today Marks 40th Anniversary of Wild Free Roaming Horse and Burro Act Passage « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Congress finds and declares that wild free-roaming horses and burros are living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West; that they contribute to the diversity of life forms within the Nation and enrich the lives of the American people; and that these horses and burros are fast disappearing from the American scene. It is the policy of Congress that wild free-roaming horses and burros shall be protected from capture, branding, harassment, or death; and to accomplish this they are to be considered in the area where presently found, as an integral part of the natural system of the public lands.

HOUSTON, (Horseback) – The late President Harry Truman was an expert on politics, heat, and kitchens. He knew that the combination of all three could be just too much for some in elective office to bear. Such seems to be the case with Wyoming Rep. Sue Wallis, the leader of an often fumbling effort to re-open horse slaughterhouses in the United States.

The sponsors, who have long championed the cause, have the bipartisan support of 14 colleagues who are co-sponsoring the bill.

Horse and burro protection occupies a very special place in the big idea known as “animal welfare.” Wild horses embody the Western spirit that has animated our national conversation about protecting animals and open spaces. Horses and burros form some of the strongest bonds with humans found anywhere in the animal kingdom.

We quoted the document, describing the methodology for the story and named our source.

Are Wild Horses Native to North America? Duhhhhhhh « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Animal welfare groups are pressing a case in federal court maintaining that wild horses roamed the West about 1.5 million years ago and didn't disappear until as recently as 7,600 years ago. More important, they say, a growing stockpile of DNA evidence shows conclusively that today's horses are genetically linked to those ancient ancestors.

Nevada Anti-Horse Tripping Bill May Get Second Chance « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Below is a forwarded email from Eric Mills calling for action in breathing life back into the Nevada Anti-Horse Tripping Bill. Tuesday you proved that faxing and calling worked, here’s another run at making a positive difference in the lives of hundreds if not thousands of horses. This, ladies and gentlemen, is what true horse people do, we care for our charges and want the very best life and future for them, unlike those who consider them property and can’t wait to slit their throats and stick a fork into them. Wallis and Duquette support horse tripping, slaughter and any other practice that hurts and/or harms American horses, be they domestic or wild, so here is your chance to, once again, strike back at the sickness and perversion that is “Slaughterhouse” Sue and her lap dog “Doink” Duquette. ~ R.T.

Video: Celebrating with Cloud on his 16th Birthday « Straight from the Horse's Heart

May 29th was a blustery day on the Pryor Mountains as we bounced up Tillett Ridge Road in a gale force wind blowing out of the north. Icy rain fell in intermittent sheets—the polar opposite of the weather on the day of Cloud’s birth.

Sixteen years ago the sun was shining. It was warm. Light clouds floated overhead. I set up my camera and was filming a brash, young stallion who was flirting with his father’s newly acquired filly when I spotted a flash of white moving through the trees and panned the camera. A pale colt tottered out of the forest beside his palomino mother. The rest of his family followed—Smokey and Mahogany, his sisters; Diamond, his yearling brother; and the other mares, Isabella the pale buckskin, and Grumpy Grulla. Pulling up the rear was Cloud’s stunning father, the unforgettable Raven. The foal struggled to keep up with his mother on their trek uphill to snow drifts under the canopy of Douglas firs.
