Wild Horse Auction Goes Off Without a Hitch, Thanks to Advocates | Straight from the Horse's Heart

WISHEK, N.D. — Before Saturday’s wild horse sale, the Wishek Livestock auctioneer called the kill buyers and told them not to come.

“I told ‘em the sale would probably go smoother if they stayed home,” said Clyde Meidinger.

Breaking News: Federal Court Extends Equine Advocate’s Injunction to Third Wanna-Be Horse Slaughter Plant | Straight from the Horse's Heart

Breaking News: Federal Court Extends Equine Advocate’s Injunction to Third Wanna-Be Horse Slaughter Plant | Straight from the Horse's Heart

he New Mexico federal court, yesterday, extended the injunction barring USDA for inspecting horse slaughter at Rains Natural Meats of Gallatin, Missouri (and thus preventing any slaughter) until the court rules on the case, which will happen by the end of October. This increases the length of the injunction previously issued against Rains Natural Meats by almost four weeks. FRER’s case has now kept horse slaughter from starting in America for roughly three months, after keeping USDA from even considering the process for all of 2012 and the first half of this year.

Genetic Report on Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Herd Disappointing | Straight from the Horse's Heart

COLORADO SPRINGS, Co. (Sept. 16, 2013) – For over thirty years, the genetics of the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Herd have been tracked by foremost equine geneticist, E. Gus Cothran. His first revelations linking the herd to the horses of the Spanish Conquistadors and Old World Iberian Horses were cause for celebration among local supporters of the herd who long believed that the primitive physical appearance of some Pryor horses were indicators of their Spanish ancestry. Cothran also indicated in earlier reports that the genetic diversity of the herd was good.

NEED MORE REASONS TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL CALL-IN TO SALLY JEWELL? | Straight from the Horse's Heart

NEED MORE REASONS TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL CALL-IN TO SALLY JEWELL? | Straight from the Horse's Heart

This commentary offers no answers; it only offers more questions. If a personal displeasure in the Wild Horse and Burro Program drives outrage in an equine advocate, the purpose of this is perhaps to add a little more fuel to the fire.
However, should the reader find something of use here, as an addition to issues that already exist, please remember this, from equine advocate luminaries Equine Welfare Alliance and ‘Habitat for Horses’ Jerry Finch:
“Please be passionate but professional  and persistent, as you may get push – back.”

Would BLM Sell Wild Horses to Slaughter? You betcha. | Straight from the Horse's Heart

Would BLM Sell Wild Horses to Slaughter? You betcha. | Straight from the Horse's Heart

In memory of the late Dr. Patricia Haight, who worked hard for the Conquistador Program, I decided to file a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request based on some records she managed to obtain via her FOIA request.
Eye to the Soul by Terry FitchPatricia Haight’s FOIA response included teleconference notes between a “team” of BLM employees who talked about slaughtering wild horses, among other things.  Cindy McDonald (American Herds blog) posted Haight’s FOIA documents (including the BLM’s discussion of alternative management options) in her library.

This article includes documented information obtained through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the BLM, on the field spaying of mares, vasectomies and chemical vasectomies, so that the public can learn more about the experimentation on feral (and wild) horses.

BLM & Forest Service Experimenting on Wild Horses | Straight from the Horse's Heart

BLM & Forest Service Experimenting on Wild Horses | Straight from the Horse's Heart

At the upcoming BLM National Wild Horse & Burro Advisory Board meeting, the board will likely bring up the subject of the field spaying of wild mares.
It is important to keep in mind that the BLM and Forest Service are partnering in EXPERIMENTING on our wild horses (and, in the case of the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, “feral” horses).  This advisory board was even discussing tubal ligation for mares (which seems to have been in trials in 2004).
Below is a presentation seemingly by LEON PIELSTICK, DVM, the veterinarian who has been conducting experiments on the field spaying of mares, and it shows (possibly Leon Pielstick himself) spaying a mare at a wild horse sanctuary.  There are also photos of a wild stallion during a vasectomy procedure, presumably at Sheldon.

Horse and Camel fossils found in western Oklahoma date back millions of years, scientist says | Straight from the Horse's Heart

Horse and Camel fossils found in western Oklahoma date back millions of years, scientist says | Straight from the Horse's Heart

CHEYENNE — An oil company drilling in western Oklahoma has stumbled across a deposit of camel and horse fossils that date back roughly five million to 12 million years, scientists who’ve examined the remains say.
The fossils, which belong to long-extinct species of camel and horse, were found in July in the Packsaddle Wildlife Management Area.
An alert heavy-machine operator working for Apache Corp., the Houston-based oil company drilling in Packsaddle, discovered the long-hidden fossils after he’d cleared away roughly 20 feet of earth.
