“This is a case where dumb meets dumber. Maddy Pickens trying to build a petting zoo for castrated BLM geldings calling them wild horses and in so doing condemns the true wild horses on 3 HMAs while the local rubes don’t know the difference between a horse and a jack rabbit (most consider the six grade to be their Senior Year, and it shows). Personally, I believe that they deserve each other. It’s disgusting!!!” ~ R.T.

PLEASE OPPOSE BLM’S DEVASTATING PLAN FOR WYOMING’S RED DESERT WILD HORSES « Straight from the Horse's Heart
Taking its marching orders from Wyoming’s powerful livestock industry, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is planning the second roundup in less than three years of wild horses living in the Adobe Town and Salt Wells Creek Herd Management Areas (HMAs) in Wyoming’s pristine Red Desert region. The 1.5 million-acre public land area is managed as a complex due to wild horse movements between the two HMAs. The roundup is proceeding despite the fact that the Adobe Town HMA is substantially below the low end of the Allowable Management Level (AML) of 610 – 800 horses. Even more disturbing, the BLM intends to remove all wild horses on “private land or checkerboard land within the Rock Springs Office portion of the HMA.” Since the majority of the Salt Wells HMA is “checkerboard” (alternating public and private land parcels), and since the wild horses living there cannot tell the difference between public and private land, this raises the alarming possiblity that the entire HMA will be zeroed out!

Today is “Feel Good Sunday” here at Straight from the Horses Heart and being that it is the Thanksgiving weekend I was planning on writing a heart tugging, gut wrenching commentary on all that we have to be thankful for but instead I am going to reserve my right to remain immature, over-the-top and completely socially unacceptable by sharing with you something that I dug up on the web that might just fit into your Christmas shopping list. It is Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday and what ever else, isn’t it?

WASHINGTON — Secretary of the Department of the Interior Ken Salazar’s relationship with a Colorado man who worked for his family’s farm and who is under federal investigation for allegedly selling American wild horses to Mexican slaughter houses came under scrutiny this week.
Tommy D. Davis, a livestock hauler from La Jara and former independent contractor at the Salazar family farm in nearby Manassa, has been the largest single purchaser of wild horses from the federal government since 2009.
All but 36 of Davis’ 1,777 purchases coincide with Salazar’s tenure as Interior secretary, now in its fourth year.

Detroit — Wynn, Elmo, Baby and Tiny have a companion with no name, and police are asking Detroit Public Schools students for help.
The Detroit Police Mounted Unit’s latest addition is a chestnut Selle Francais gelding formerly named Korus. The animal was donated in May 2011, by Denise Lutz, wife of retired automotive executive Bob Lutz, both of whom were instrumental in resurrecting the unit after it was disbanded in 2005 for budgetary reasons.

AA Investigation: Mexico Horse Slaughter Plants Continue to be Non-Compliant with EU Standards « Straight from the Horse's Heart
Animals’ Angels investigators observed harsh conditions in EU approved Mexican slaughterhouses during an intensive investigation conducted in September 2012. The goal of this follow up investigation was to check if any improvements had been made since the 2007/2008 investigations had revealed abhorrent conditions. Animal welfare investigators are accustomed to observing the most egregious treatment of animals. Even the slightest improvements are welcome, but do not bring a cease fire to the battle for humane treatment of all animals transported to slaughter.

On Election Day, at an enthusiastic gathering of Obama supporters in Fountain, Colorado; Dave Philips, a reporter for the Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph, had just finished an interview with Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar about his controversial policies for managing America’s wild horse populations. Just after Secretary Salazar answered final questions about the future safety of wild horses and he turned to leave the interview, he unexpectedly approached Phillips and told him, “If you set me up like this again, I’ll punch you out.” Standing nearby was Ginger Kathrens, Executive Director of the Cloud Foundation, a Colorado-based wild horse advocacy organization. “I was stunned by the Secretary’s rude and clearly hostile comment toward Dave,” said Kathrens.

We are late in publishing a commentary, today, because one of the cardinal rules of this blog has been to avoid discussion on both politics and religion with good reasoning; the above two issues are personal, intimate and to many very private. I have delayed posting so that Terry, my truly better half, could weigh in on my commentary and I do feel that I owe this readership a word or two, we are family. I believe I am now at edit number seventeen under Terry’s direction.

Eleven year old Robin Warren started a petition on Change.org, see below, where she has asked others to join her in demanding that the reckless and deadly BLM wild horse and burro roundups stop while an external investigation is launched to find out why the BLM sold over 1,700 captured wild horses to a known kill buyer, and neighbor to Ken Salazar, for slaughter in Mexico. That singular petition and the response it garnered moved Ginger Kathrens of the Cloud Foundation and Terry and myself with Wild Horse Freedom Federation to such an extent that the Cloud Foundation funded the printing of 113, 526 signatures, over 800 pages, and I laid aside my prepared three minute speech to the board to, instead, read Robin’s letter while Ginger and Terry laid the massive pile of signatures on the table in front of the board and WH&B manager Joan Goifoyle. It was dynamic and if anyone missed the point they were brain dead…then again, it was the advisory board and the BLM.
