Last Wednesday, Jason Meduna, convicted of 145 counts of felony animal cruelty carrying a sentence of 5-10 years in January of 2010 was covertly granted parole by the state of Nebraska while they negotiated with Wyoming to allow the felon to reside in their state upon his release. The official parole board statement referred to Meduna’s parole as “pending” while they attempted to rid themselves of the controversial wild horse and burro murderer at their very first opportunity and to add injury to insult, they are going to attempt to dump their trash just across their state line so that the smell does not carry back to their precious board room. Sorry boys and girls, he ain’t gonna be all that far away.

Blazer, the Little Horse that Could! « Straight from the Horse's Heart

As funny as this may sound one of the most significant influences in my life was not a person, a book or even a song; it was my horse Blazer. I was given Blazer as a birthday gift when I was 10 years old and from that day on my life was never the same. I spent all my time with Blazer. He taught me commitment, responsibility, and how to love something unconditionally and for him he expected nothing in return but maybe a treat every now and then. Through Blazer, I grew as a person. I trained him from the ground up and made him into something that no one else ever thought he could be. Blazer was 14.2 hands, which is about 4'6 in feet.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, released the following statement regarding Interior Secretary Ken Salazar’s order to combine the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) into the Bureau of Land Management (BLM):

“I’m deeply concerned about this proposed unilateral action. If it were simply a consolidation of administrative functions, that is something I could support. According to Interior’s release, however, it appears that the proposed merger would be much more extensive and, I believe, would require amending the separate organic acts that established BLM and OSM.

A friend on FaceBook tipped me off to this little gem, below. Being a blogger and writer I am acutely aware of the fact that everyone is entitled to their own opinion but this ole back-woods cuss about takes the cake when it comes to cruelty, ignorance and a single minded buy-in to the BLM’s BS. You have to visit the “Opinion” website and drop off a comment or two as the author’s article has been up for over 24 hours with nary a comment to be seen. This will surely get your chaps hiked up but remember, Sunday is just around the corner and we have a special story to share that will wash out your minds and charge up your spirit so hang in there.

Texas A&M Fined for Horse Slaughter Transportation Violations « Straight from the Horse's Heart

AA has gained information through a Freedom of information Act Request (FOIA) that powerfully underscores the cruelty of horse slaughter on U.S. soil. Under the most ideal conditions possible – including watering stops during single-deck transport, less packed conditions and multiple cameras with a team of monitors – a horse died in the bottom of a trailer during transport. The study adds to ever increasing evidence that demonstrates horse slaughter cannot be ‘improved’ into something that is humane.

Animal’s Angels Investigate a Slaughterhouse of Horrors « Straight from the Horse's Heart

A recent investigation by Animal’s Angels reveals the horrors that horses face at rendering plants in the United States. Although plants, of the same genre, no longer operate in the U.S. to butcher equine companions for human consumption the practice of cruel ripping the life out of horses exists to feed their flesh, bones and hides to zoo animals. This is the sort of inhumanity that the likes of Sue Wallis, Dave Duquette and their minion of mindless followers want to bring back, in great numbers, onto American soil and in a neighborhood near you. The reality of the cruelty needs to be upfront and ever present in an effort to stifle the ignorance of facts, ignoring of science and lack of good business sense that permeates the pro-slaughter movement at every turn. Pictures speak a thousand words. Thanks AA!

No Fences on Perry’s Texas Border, but They Shoot Immigrant Burros « Straight from the Horse's Heart

On October 18, 2011, during a Republican presidential debate, Texas Governor Rick Perry accused former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney of lying when Romney denied hiring illegal immigrants to work on his property. Apparently, Romney did hire a lawn company in 2006 that employed illegal immigrants, but he fired the company when he learned of the immigration status of its employees.

The illegal immigration issue is like a soldier’s sword for Perry, used repeatedly to slash at Mitt Romney, who is in favor of a border fence between the U.S. and Mexico.

Odd that Perry would argue against a fence when he fully advocates the shooting of “immigrant Mexican” wild burros that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department claims are sneaking across the border into Big Bend Ranch State Park.

Friday’s calls for assistance went unheeded until the video went public and only then did the BLM launch another of their infamous internal investigations where it was determined by the BLM that the BLM was, of course, not at fault but it was noted that an excess of mud and manure had accumulated but it was the fault of local weather conditions.

Over the past several weeks a wonderful story has been circulating across the internet about a Montana trail guide horse, Tonk, who along with his rider, Erin Bolster, fearlessly intervened in a Grizzly attack and saved a little boy from what would have been a gruesome bear mauling.

I have intended to run the story, here, but other issues have reared their heads and we have been charging forward with the ongoing battles of equine advocacy, until last night when I noticed that both Erin and Tonk were scheduled to be on the David Letterman show so I broke tradition and stayed up a little later in hopes of catching a glimpse of this brave equine and his stout female partner. I was not disappointed and was actually impressed that Letterman managed to pull off a relatively normal interview without either being glib or demeaning Erin and Tonk’s brave actions, but he did come off as a bit of wimp being, himself, obviously afraid of good ole Tonk. Hat’s off to Tonk for being a mildly nervous but perfect gentleman in front of the lights, cameras and clapping crowd.

Over the last 18 months Laura Leigh has been attempting to document the “hands on care” of wild horses. She is compiling the information into a series of videos to condense and share the information with the public.

“Some of the documentation has been released as it happens,” said Laura Leigh, founder of Wild Horse Education and VP of Wild Horse Freedom Federation “however I have found that the ‘bigger picture’ is often hard to follow through the updates. So I am attempting to edit the pieces together in a way that is easier to comprehend.”

Leigh intends to release the videos in one hour segments that focus on areas of concern. The first segment, available for viewing this coming Sunday, will focus on the documentation of the removal of horses from public land and the ongoing battle to obtain meaningful documentation. Subsequent segments will cover the history of herd management (under differing jurisdictions and the public confusion that creates) as well as a segment on the possible future of wild herds on public land if protocols continue unchecked.
