Congressmen Send Letter to Salazar to Halt Costly and Deadly BLM Wild Horse Stampedes, AGAIN « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Washington, D.C.– Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva today sent a letter to Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar urging an immediate halt to a new Bureau of Land Management (BLM) plan to spay and geld wild horses, which could lead to the brutal death of many horses and contribute to their eventual extinction in the United States. The letter, co-signed by 64 other Members of Congress, outlines concerns with BLM wild horse oversight practices and highlights the extremity of the new spaying plan.

This is the last video that will be posted for a bit. Editing video takes an incredible amount of time. I will go back to archiving the video in case the documentation is required and posting still images. But I think this series of three days gives you an idea how frustrating this is. It will not give you a clear picture of the wear and tear on your vehicle, the damage done to your equipment or the toll it takes on your face.

Wild Horse Babies Killed by BLM at Triple B Roundup « Straight from the Horse's Heart

At the roundup we had runners go off with no explanation. We had a baby come in that I could see was injured.

So I added an extra two hours of driving to my day and headed to holding.

There I saw three youngsters treated for injury. I do not know how many were treated prior to my arrival. (note: it is interesting that I asked about the injuries and am only given information on the treatment I actually saw, with no other information offered. It always seems like “If they don’t see it, it didn’t happen”).

Washington, DC (July 25, 2011). . . Western Watersheds Project, a leading environmental organization and the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign (AWHPC), a national coalition, today filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia that seeks to block the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) from implementing an unprecedented plan that initiates the destruction of two wild horse populations in southwestern Wyoming.

When you are at a roundup what you don’t see is as important as what you do see. Realize that the PR folks sitting with you are very good at what they do, that’s why they are there. Conversation can be extremely pleasant but a real distraction if you can’t talk and work at the same time.

Fitch Outs BLM Employee Who Advocates Hunting Season on Wild Horses « Straight from the Horse's Heart

HOUSTON, (Horseback) – An employee in the Denver office of the federal Bureau of Land Management has been outed as advocating a hunting season for wild horses in the west.

The employee’s email was traced after it was sent to author R.T. Fitch’s “Straight From the Horse’s Heart” blog. Fitch, a fierce opponent of current BLM stampede, capture, and hold, policies traced the email address to BLM NOC OC-330, Denver Federal Center, Bldg 40 – the agency’s National Operations Center.

Well once again another BLM employee, bored from suckling on the teat of the Federal government, has written to this blog with the recommendation that the only true way to manage wild horses is to open up a hunting season on them.

Analysis: Piceance-East Douglas Preliminary BLM Wild Horse Environmental Assessment « Straight from the Horse's Heart

This analysis was not conducted with the intent of submitting comments in opposition of the round-up but instead to understand the White River Field Office’s reasoning for why this roundup should take place. There is acknowledgement of the history of this management area; but also how it’s past administration may now be contributing to the perception of range degradation and overpopulation. Also, there may be some personal bias evident and for that I apologize; I have tried to view this with a clinical eye and simply report facts as outlined in the Preliminary Environmental Assessment.

Summertime and the Living is Easy for Vegas and the Wild Horses « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Ah, July’s sizzling hot days in Las Vegas turn into mild evenings and mellow the most work-weary of us. Summer may be our desert’s harshest season of the year, but evening gentles us into peace and rest, a scarce and wonderful thing in today’s world. This past Saturday night we spent with wild horses, a BBQ by a high altitude lake, and a full moon that reminded me of all those beautiful years I spent in the African veldt (bush) when the elephants and zebra, giraffe and lion could breathe easy at summer sundown. The thirst, fatigue, and the hunt for food paused. All of us, human or 4-footed, relaxed and luxuriated in the soft, warm evening air.

The Humane Society of the United States issued a report on July 13th stating that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) needs to be more transparent in how they manage their oftentimes deadly wild horse and burro helicopter stampedes. No insult intended to this well respected animal welfare organization but that is exactly what active wild horse advocates have been screaming about for years and speaks directly to the lawsuit that Wild Horse Freedom Federation’s vice president Laura Leigh has filed against the BLM; lack of transparency and blatant violations of First Amendment Rights.

Chicago (EWA) –Equine Welfare organizations around the world are responding to an appeal by their Mexican counterparts requesting support in forcing an end to the blatant cruelty and abuse at the San Bernabe Slaughter Auction in the Municipality of Almoloya de Juárez.

A video appeal was released on July 3, revealing the common place abuse of equines heading to slaughter. In an incident that is said to be typical of the mistreatment, a pregnant mare with a broken foot was pushed off a ramp that resulted in her breaking both of her knees. In obvious agony, she was dragged off to slaughter.

PORTLAND, Ore. —The Cloud Foundation is outraged at the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) lack of transparency and avoidance of public input pertaining to the Kiger/Riddle Mountain roundup happening now outside of Burns, Oregon. The herds are famous for their Spanish Conquistador ancestry as well as Disney’s hit movie, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. The Foundation asks Congress to stop the illegal roundup now in order to save these herds from being destroyed. BLM’s plan would reduce the two herds to grossly non-viable populations of less than 50 animals each.

Disgraced Wyoming Congresswoman Takes Aim at Wolves after Missing Horses « Straight from the Horse's Heart
Last month Wyoming’s lone Representative Cynthia Lummis (R) attempted an ill planned and poorly executed effort to tack on a pro-horse slaughter amendment onto an agriculture budget bill in an attempt to appease big agriculture and ranching special interest groups. Rep. Lummis was publicly called out by her own party leadership and was forced to withdraw her amendment. She left the house floor in a flurry of righteous indignation and contempt. Concerned American citizens were in high hopes that she would crawl back under her rock and disappear but with all that is evil and serves dark masters she has returned; and now it is the American wolf that she serves up on her menu of animal destruction.

Historic Wild Horse First Amendment Case Filed Against Feds « Straight from the Horse's Heart

HOUSTON, (WHFF) – On June 30, 2011 the last reply brief was filed in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in the landmark First Amendment case for the public’s “right to know” in matters of government action; these actions do not relate to issues of national security, military secrets or pan-handling on the White House lawn but solely speak to the meaningful access to assess and track wild horses and burros from range through holding and the hands-on management of those herds by a government agency.
