With stampede operations allegedly shut down for August 28th at the Twin Peaks location Terry and I decided to head in one direction while Herd Watch Coordinator, Laura Leigh went in another. We had visited the Litchfield Holding Facility everyday for almost a week so we packed up the rental SUV and headed to Palomino Valley north of Sparks, NV. Palomino Valley is where the remainder of the captive Twin Peaks horses will go now that Litchfield is full. As of Friday, 909 wild souls, from Twin Peaks alone, had been captured and stripped of their freedom and futures, we wanted to see what the fate of the remaining captives would look like and we are sorry that we did.

TWIN PEAKS, CA (Horseback) – A heavy, armed police presence protected America and the Federal Bureau of Land Management wild horse stampede contractor from four journalists and no anti-BLM activists at the “gather” held today at Twin Peaks, according to Horseback Magazine’s R.T. Fitch at the site. There were two reporters and a photographer representing the Texas based magazine, as well as a videographer working for the New York Times, a paper which was provided unfettered access earlier this week while other media organizations and citizen observers were kept at bay.

SUSANVILLE, CA (SFTHH) Although the mean beating of helicopter blades was heard across a portion the public lands north of Susanville not a single wild horse was witnessed being captured this day. Press and public alike were sequestered on a small, hillside lookout above a temporary horse trap in the valley below. Although the observation area was closer than in days past it was impossible to see the trap and chute in its entirety, due to vegetation, and observers were forced to fight for viewing spots behind the limited jute rope observation location. Unlike the access that was granted to the New York Times only 48 hours earlier the press was held a considerable distance from what would be considered fair and appropriate access as set by the earlier precedence.

Each morning observers must tolerate a law enforcement briefing by BLM Security Chief Jason Parker who clearly states that the public will be held back from the private land, where the trap is located, due to safety and liability issues and should anyone not comply, “things will be escalated to the next level”. Today that changed when the BLM allowed a New York Times photographer to not only locate himself on the private land but to be within the chute of the trap and exposed to both the horses and the aggressive, low altitude helicopter.

But as so often seems to be the case when Advocating for Equines, personal beliefs and morality of the heart are often punished by those who don’t think as you do. The voice of the American horse is being heard across this great land; from the vanishing cries of the terrified wild ones to the death screams of the horses headed across the border to slaughter, their voices are being heard. Those voices are reaching a new volume because the vocal cords for the horses are you, each and every one of you who care about the welfare and safety of our national treasure are making a difference by standing shoulder to shoulder in defense of those who cannot speak for themselves. But the very passion and power that fuels this movement could also be the instrument of its demise if it loses focus and turns inwards upon ourselves versus outwards toward the enemy.

HOUSTON (SFTHH) – On Aug 17th federal officials released a report stating that the holes in the carcass of a young foal found by wild horse advocates probably came from scavenger birds and not gunshot wounds.
Two days after the remains were found by concerned U.S. citizens a vet from the U.S. Agriculture Department’s Animal Plant Health Inspection Service examined the carcass and stated that the cause of death could not be determined due to advance stages of decomposition according to BLM spokesperson Jan Bedrosian.

The Custer National Forest awarded a contract on August 6, 2010. It calls for the building of new, bigger, stronger, longer fence to prevent the Pryor Wild Horse Herd from grazing on their mid-summer through fall pastures atop their mountain home. The first question I am always asked is “Why?” To answer honestly, I am not sure what is pushing this kind of expensive and unwanted project. But, to even try to answer the question requires a bit of a history lesson.

Most pointed: Disruptions or jeopardizing of safety would discontinue regular observation day. This was punctuated by 3 armed Law Enforcement officers; one, wore a Kevlar vest.Among the Observers were two political Activists, seeking to learn more on the issues of Wild Horses & Burros; a free-lance journalist and her partner; a graduate student, authoring a thesis based on a year of study in this HMA; an older gentleman who has lived the majority of his life in the area. And two additional representatives of the BLM.

The two main legislative issues H.R. 503 (S727) and H.R. 1018 (S1579), but also H.R. 305 (horse transportation safety act) and the PMU industry problems and breeding industry problems. Our motto is to kill many flies with one swatter while we are at it. We would like to see all grassroots factions pull together in order to gain three times the power against the enemy. Washington, D.C. - The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), along with leading Members of Congress, numerous wild horse advocacy organizations and the majority of Americans, is exceedingly frustrated with the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) gross mismanagement of America’s wild horses and burros. An independent observer who recently returned from scouting the Herd Area in north Elko County, Nevada where the Owyhee portion of the Tuscarora Gather took place has photographic evidence that one of the wild horses appears to have been driven to his or her death over rocky cliffs, presumably by Cattoor, the BLM’s helicopter contractor.

Today, Director Bob Abbey, Director of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued a statement which in a nutshell says that the “BLM’s goal is to enable healthy horses and burros to thrive on public lands”. In the real world I would love to believe those words but the reality of the matter is that the statement is as far from the truth as is the freedom of 38,000 wild horses held in pens with no hope of living out their normal lives.
