BLM/El Paso Corp’s Controversial Ruby Pipeline Project Hits a Snag « Straight from the Horse's Heart
Houston, TX – (SFTHH) To the delight of environmentalists and wild horse advocates the construction of the $3 billion Ruby Pipeline Project has been delayed. The pipeline is slated to run through pristine wilderness from Wyoming through northern Utah and Nevada to Oregon. The project has been the reason that wild horse advocates claim the BLM has been gutting the publicly owned northern Nevada ranges of their native, American wild horses.

Ken Salazar Appoints Bob Abbey from Morally Bereft BLM to repair “Corrupt” MMS « Straight from the Horse's Heart
It’s Sunday, May 30, 2010 and thousands of barrels of oil are continuing to gush into the Gulf of Mexico while tens of thousands of native, wild horses are languishing and dying in concentration camp style pens out west. What do these two disasters have in common; Secretary of Interior (DOI) Ken Salazar and Director of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Bob Abbey.
Equine Welfare Alliance President Speaks of Pro-Horse Progress « Straight from the Horse's Heart
The question was asked about how we at EWA feel about our progress against horse slaughter this year.
Please understand that we regard this whole process as an analogy to war. It is not fought on a single front or with a single strategy and there are many operations that we cannot talk about without giving away our advantage. Sometimes we can divulge things later, and sometimes not at all. For example, you probably now know that we worked hard to get the town of Harding access to the pollution and sewer records from Cavel, Dallas Crown and NVF. We did not go to them and say “please don’t build a plant that kills our beautiful horses.” We showed them that a plant would be bad for the community and we also showed them that there was no pot of gold.

Americans Call for Urgent Reform in Department of Interior’s Wild Horse and Burro Program « Straight from the Horse's Heart
Washington, D.C. (May 28, 2010)— Currently being questioned by the House Committee on Natural Resources regarding the Deepwater Horizon disaster, Department of the Interior (DOI) Secretary Ken Salazar has come under fire for his lack of oversight on offshore drilling. Wild horse advocates contend that the mismanagement extends not just to an unparalled ecological disaster at sea, but a humane, environmental and fiscal disaster on our public lands. Wild horses and burros are being rounded up off their legally designated homes on Western ranges while extractive industries are allowed to monopolize public lands at enormous expense to the American taxpayer and the environment.

Push to Save America’s Wild Horses Continues after Judge Dismisses Case on Technicality « Straight from the Horse's Heart
Washington, D.C. (May 25, 2010)— Solely on the basis of standing and mootness the lawsuit brought against the Department of Interior (DOI) and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) by In Defense of Animals (IDA), wildlife ecologist and Cloud Foundation Board Member Craig Downer and author Terri Farley was dismissed by the Honorable Judge Paul L. Friedman of the U.S. District Court in Washington D.C. on May 24th. The Cloud Foundation continues to call for the return to the wild of the beleaguered Calico horses now in holding pens. To date at least 90 horses have died, 40 or more mares had spontaneous late term abortions due to stress and an unknown number of young foals have died in the privately-owned feedlot-style pens in Fallon, Nevada where the majority of the captured horses are held without windbreaks, shade or cover.

Wild Horses Die, the Gulf Withers and It Is Business as Usual for the Department of the Interior « Straight from the Horse's Heart
It seriously frustrates me to sit here and attempt to dig up something good, something encouraging that will enlighten and/or enrich the day of an individual who is engaged enough to check in and find out what is happening in the ever shifting world of equine advocacy. The reason for the pain is that it is so seldom that we have something good or encouraging to report, hopefully today we can make that shift if not for only a moment.

Wild Horses and Dolphins: They Both Speak the Same Message « Straight from the Horse's Heart

Ken Salazar: Up to His Neck in Wild Horses, Oil, Gas and Whales « Straight from the Horse's Heart
The Wild Horse advocates and Environmentalists have been screaming it for the past year and no one has listened, nothing has changed except that conditions have worsened. The Obama Administration’s selection of Ken Salazar to the position of Secretary of the Department of Interior has been in question since the day of his appointment. Muddled in rumors of collusion and ineptitude Salazar, a rancher by trade, has made it his hallmark to bumble and stumble his way through mismanaging his federal agency while ignoring congressional inquiries and public opinion.

The Sun Shines on Horses in Florida « Straight from the Horse's Heart
While states such as Wyoming, Montana, Tennessee and Missouri are actively ruining their images by attempting to bring the predatory business of horse slaughter within their boarders, the great state of Florida has taken a leap forward and done exactly the opposite in an effort to make their state safer for both horses and the people who appreciate them.

More “Slaughterhouse” Sue Drivel Debunked « Straight from the Horse's Heart
This is probably one of the best demonstrations of an illogical argument. She is stating that at best, 7% of the population is vegetarian. How is it then that everyone against horse slaughter is a vegetarian? The comment on welfare advocates being a fanatic quasi religion is really quite humorous. The overwhelming majority of horse owners are against slaughter. Exactly how does taking accountability for one’s actions translate to be a fanatic and unnatural? Isn’t that the healthy and natural way of being a productive member of society?

Update May 14, 2010: Missouri’s 2010 legislative session has ended. Some say that’s a good thing for animals. The pro horse slaughter provisions, originally, H.B. 1747, buried in S.B. 795, were removed by the conference committee.
BLM Invites Public Comment at Advisory Board Meeting – More BS or Will They Listen? « Straight from the Horse's Heart
Listed below is a recent press release from the BLM with vital information regarding their next Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board meeting. It is of the utmost importance that as many concerned American citizens attend and speak out in behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves. It takes a lot of guts for the everyday, regular U.S. woman or man to stand before this board of finger tapping, sighing, disengaged group of special interest appointees and speak their minds, but it can be done. It must be done as we have no choice but to do the right thing and attempt to save the few remaining wild horses that still run free on their designated public land.

Wild Mustang Truth – the Anniversary « Straight from the Horse's Heart
It’s now been a year since the anniversary of the seizure at convicted wild horse abuser, Jason Meduna’s 3-Strikes Ranch.

How To Be An Effective Advocate For Wild Horses « Straight from the Horse's Heart
Actually, I’m fairly new to the wild horse situation myself. Due to my personal experiences, stopping horse slaughter was always my passion. I’ve never lived far enough west for wild horses to be a common topic of conversation, and I have never seen a wild herd. But when I heard those rumors about sending captive wild horses to slaughter, I decided I needed to investigate.
If you already know about horses, so much the better, because so many people these days have never even SEEN a live horse, so they can easily be misled by the massive disinformation campaign that the anti-horse people have mounted. You need to be able to set them straight.

Mother’s Day for Captive Wild Horse Mares « Straight from the Horse's Heart
WASHINGTON D.C. (May 4, 2010) ―The American wild horse crisis is filled with issues of animal cruelty and the world looks on and asks, “Why?”. Currently the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is holding over 1800 captured Calico mustangs at a privately owned, feedlot-style facility in Fallon, Nevada. The manure-strewn pens have become a makeshift nursery for captured mares now giving birth without cover or protection from the elements.
